This is because windows (and maybe other OSs) binaries are not ready yet,
AFAIK, and the page will be updated when everything's ready.

CVS would be the best way out indeed. But you can also try SourceForge or
Savannah (search for abiword or perform some magic on the address given
for 0.9.6.1) or Uwog's CVS rpms (look at the developer pages for the
address).
