Linux

This may not necessarily be appropriate on an Abi list, but since so many of
you use Linux, I'd thought I'd ask.

I've been thinking recently of trying Linux as I've grown more dissatisfied
with MS-Windows and the MS attitude behind it. Yet, the one thing that
holds me back is seeing how much difficulty many of the Linux Abi users have
installing and using Abi on their systems. I realize that Abi is still
pre-release, but I haven't had nearly the difficulties with the Windows
version as I have read from many of you concerning the Linux versions. I
read of tarballs and rpms and dependencies and other things I have never
heard of. Is this normal Linux stuff or is it unique to the early nature of
Abi. Is there really that much difference between different Linux
distributions that Abi would work fine on one and not on others? If so, how
does any given Linux user know if a new application will work with his
particular flavor?

Not trying to clog up the Abi list with a Windows-Linux debate - as I'm sure
many of you have strong feelings - so please feel free to respond to me
privately and off-list.

Virgil
