Sounds like you're installing the abiword-gnome version when you haven't got
the latest version of Gnome installed; I got the same error when installing
on my laptop, which only has KDE. I think libgal is something to do with the
Galeon web browser.
Have you tried the gtk version? Works fine on Mandrake 8.0
