The following is the best workaround i can offer you
assuming you dont have permission to change the windows language to
    American (English).
Abiword is designed to run in the same language as windows is running in
(and a few more langauges that windows cannot run in). Here is how you
set the language to a language other than what windows is using.

Open the windows find program, search for:
    Abiword.Profile
(in windows 98 it is probably in c:\windows\Abisuite\)

open Abiword.Profile using notepad/wordpad/any text editor

    read the instructions carefully.
I'm serious, read the instruction really really carefully.

for German German (as opposed to swiss german) the language code is de-DE
the American English language code is en-US
there are ~3 options that will have the value de-DE
you need to copy the options from the scheme marked _builtin_
    to the scheme marked _custom_
copy them to the custom scheme and then change the bits where it says
    de-DE to en-US

You must change the scheme that is actually currently being used. this is
explained in the instructions. this is why you must read the instructions
(losts of people dont, including me but i figured it out it just would
have been easier if i had read the instructions)

I was going to ask what is "the Kim Komando Show" but i assume this is it
    http://www.komando.com/

Always good to hear people saying nice if somewhat inaccurate things about
    Abiword.
For anyone else wondering here is her very short review

    Sincerely

    Subject: Wrong Language

Having received information from "The Kim Komando Show" about the abi
    word
program I downloaded it, but the program is in German. I used USA-1.
    What
    is
    USA-2 and EU?
I must explain that I am an American living in Germany and using a German
    PC
with MS 98 second edition I wanted the program in English as it is easier
for me to understand than German software. This has never happened
    before
with other downloads. What did I do wrong?
    Thank you
    Walter Doberneck
