Hm, in addition to what I have tried -- some more news: it seems that the
export to RTF works if and only if you use ttf fonts like "Arial CE" (but
not the original Abiword fonts) with the exception for `zabovedot'.
`zabovedot' ('¿') is stored in .abw XML files as '¿'; all the other
characters are stored just normally. In the RTF file, the iso-latin-2 \'bf
character becomes the unicode \uc0\u0 sequence. These characters are then
not correctly displayed by Microsoft Word. The same happens in an apparent
random way with other characters: sacute ('¶'), aogonek ('±') etc. when
doing cut & paste from a terminal. If you substitute the characters *in
the abiword XML file*, e.g. cat file1.abw | perl -p -e 's/¿/¿/g;' >
file2.abw
...then the characters will stay same during following operations, and will
get correctly imported to Microsoft Word.
If you use original Abiword fonts, then in Microsoft Word in place of
polish national characters you'll get their iso-latin-1 counterparts.
This all is infuriating, frustrating and totally obscure to me.
