Of course! That is the purpose of grammar checkers. Obviously it can only make rudimentary checks. The thoughtful writer is simply using it as an aid in a careful review/edit of their work as is always done in any case. A grammar handbook might be useful but saying that is a substitute for an automatic feature, no matter how basic, is nonsense. That is what computers do! After all, with careful review & a dictionary, you can correct spelling.
Grammar checkers & thesaurus are found in every major word processors because many people find them useful. Abiword will simply not be considered a full feature, serious word processor by many people who spend their working days processing words if these features are not included.
