I apologize for adding yet another font-startup-problem to the list,
but
I'm stuck now, too. Downloaded 9.2 static (RedHat 6.2 with XFree86
4.0.3)
and installed it. I type "AbiWord" and it just silently hangs. Looks
like a loop - CPU: 80% Abi, 20% X. (Well, it said "Gdk-WARNING **:
locale not supported by C library" but that goes away if I "export
LANG=C". Maybe I shouldn't do that, but I don't think this is the
problem.)
strace -f AbiWord revealed the dreaded "X Error of failed request:
86"
(X_SetFontPath) after about 500 lines, just before it tries to decide
which executable to run. Then it forks and goes on for a while and the
last thing it did was something about
 " [pid 932] open("/usr/lib/gconv/ISO8859-1.so", O_RDONLY) = 4 " and
 " [pid 932] open("/usr/lib/gconv/CP1252.so", O_RDONLY) = 4 " which
again
sounds suspiciously fontish to me.
I went through the archives and faqs and so on. I SEEM to have some
kind of Times New Roman in /usr/share/AbiSuite/fonts, with names like
n0210031.pfb (according to fonts.dir). I did the chkfontpath -a (the
above) thing, and indeed found that this path had been added to
/etc/X11/fs/config, which I GUESS is where it's supposed to be. Many
replies said add load "Type1" to XF86Config, which I did in desperation
although I gather that was irrelevant if I'm not doing TrueType fonts.
Many X restarts. All to no avail.
Any suggestions would be truly appreciated. Thanks in advance to all
who must feel like they've already seen this one a hundred times.
  Cheers, Jim
