See bug (RFE) 2031 (http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2031)
which allows a workaround. Bug (RFE) 2031 was fixed by Dom Lachowicz,
having the initial paragraph default to the Normal style. If you change
the font style of Normal to the font you prefer, I think that will solve
your problem.
(I just downloaded AbiWord 0.9.5 (for Windows) and can confirm that the
initial paragraph does default to the Normal style, and now you can
change the font characteristics of the style using
Format --> Style --> (select a style) --> Modify. I have not puzzled
out how to make a permanent change to the Normal style yet.)
Hope this helps,
