Dominic,

I doubt that it would be a hardware problem, but there may be some
chance. Do the vertical bars look like a real "|" character or do they
look a little different, perhaps extended vertically to the top and
bottom?

If you have any doubt, perhaps you should try to rule out a hardware
problem, perhaps by changing graphics boards and see if the problem
stays with the original machine or moves to the one with the graphics
card from that machine!
