Aha !!  So I'm not the only one that got this problem !!!!
Salvation is at hand ... open an xterm, become root, and type :
ophelia# find / -name fonts -print
Before long, you will see something resembling this line :
/usr/local/AbiSuite/lib/fonts
Kill the find (^C), exit from su, and type the following:
desmond@ophelia.fdi.net % xset fp+ /usr/local/AbiSuite/lib/fonts
Now, type :
AbiWord &
... and it should work.
