You can enter special characters into AbiWord. Rather than use escape
codes, you can directly enter them from the keyboard. Of course, you have
to be using a foreign keyboard layout.

AbiWord does have it's own set of XML tags and attributes. As some of the
remaining features such as fields and tables begin to take shape, so will
the final XML specifications. At that time, there may be more
documentation available. Until then, the AbiWord source code itself is the
only place to look.

There have been a few problems like this in the past. First, make sure you
are you using AbiWord 0.7.8. If so, let's take this off the list. Send me
personal email with a reproducible set of steps that shows the problem, and
I will get it isolated and logged.
