Marvelous, simply marvelous - for the sake of completeness the relevant
links required were
libgdk12
libgmodule
libglib
libgtk12
the command ldd AbiWord was helpful in showing what else I was missing.
Thank you very much - now I can start playing- I will crosspost this to
FreeBSD - questions when I get back to my office so others may also benefit
