I received an error message from Abiword when I tried to run it after
installing the Helix Gnome desktop on RedHat 7. It complained about the
True Type Font Times New Roman as being missing and referred me to a url
that looked something like the following (I am writing the url from
memory so it could be slightly off)

When Abiword failed to load I went to the URl indicated and it said
that three files must be put in your XF86Config file under
/etc/X11/XF86Config. The three lines that it said to add were:
Load "freetype"
Load "type1"
Load "speedo"
When I looked into my XF86Config file I did not see any obvious place to
add these but given that they are fonts and that under the files section
of my XF86Config file it shows the font path I reasoned that this was a
logical place to put the three lines. Unfortunately, the page that I
was referred to by Abiword was very vague on details as to where in my
XF86Config file the three aforementioned lines were to be entered.
After driving myself mental on the issue I asked the question on the
Abisource mailing list and A kind user was nice enough to let me know
where I had made my mistake. Since I now know how to fix the error I
figured that I would post a more thorough solution on the mailinglist so
that if others have this problem they will not have to waste as much
time trying to figure out what is going on. On RedHat 7, which I am
using with an updated helix Gnome desktop, there are actually two
XF86Config files under /etc/X11 the two files are XF86Config and
XF86Config-4 . The XF86Config-4 is the file that I ended up having
to modify to resolve the issue with the Times New Roman Font issue which
occurs on Redhat Linux when you are using Xfree86 4.0.x. So the web
site I went to which described how to fix this error was not clear and
made it sound like I had to modify XF86Config when in fact I had to edit
XF86Config-4. So the real fix to this problem is as follows:
Go to /etc/X11 and edit the file XF86Config-4. Under this file, you
will see a modules section, at the end of the modules section add the
following three lines:
Load "freetype"
Load "type1"
Load "speedo"
then save the changes of Course and log out of Xwindows and then log
back into Xwindows after making this change (rebooting at this point
wouldn't hurt) and then relaunch Abiword and it should work fine. (
NOTE: I am using RedHat 7 with Helix Gnome package, this solution
worked for me with RedHat 7 with helix Gnome installed, the solution may
have to be altered if you are using a different version of RedHat or a
different Linux Distribution I have posted this for informational
purposes only in case others are in a similar situation)
