From the localization perspective, and as as an interested party in a
downstream distributor of AbiWord (via OLPC builds), I would give a +1
to a 2.8.x release if only to take advantage of the improvements to
L10n that can be had from the hosting of the AbiWord PO files on
Pootle. I have gone through many of the languages looking for severe
errors (e.g. printf errors) and tried to make corrections where
possible in 2.8 PO files, or at least flag the strings as fuzzy and in
need of attention by a native speaker.

It is a very simple matter to transfer improved 2.9 strings to the 2.8
PO file via Poolte (with an upload/overwrite of 2.9 over 2.8 and an
update from Templates back to a proper 2.8 PO template) as 2.8 is
more or less a simple subset of 2.9 (string-wise). I would encourage
localizers to complete and review the 2.9 PO file and contact me about
performing the transfer to 2.8.
