AbiWord (2.2.5) was included in a review of text editors for Windows in
the May 2005 issue of CPU Magazine (http://www.computerpoweruser.com)
entitled "Let's Talk About Text, Baby" by Marty Sems (pages 76-78).
Overall it was a very favorable review.
A few quotes:
"This light word processor should worry Microsoft every bit as much as
Linux and OpenOffice.org. It's free, yet offers all of Word's most-used
features without the bloat."
"In short, few typical users won't find AbiWord perfectly adequate for
word processing and text editing alike."
"The free, powerful AbiWord processor is the smartest choice for most
users, hands down."
The reviewer liked that Abi was able to preserve all the formatting of
his Word 2003 test document. He also liked that it was available for a
wide variety of OSes and languages, and mentioned features such as
justification, zoom, columns, mail merge, footnotes/endnotes, and
revision tracking.
A couple bugs/oddities were mentioned:
1) auto-spellcheck: "at times the AI seems a little confused as to what
part of a word it underlines"
2) "My installation added a handful of international versions of
Courier and Times New Roman to the fonts already present on my PC.
However, most of the fonts I tried looked suspiciously similar, leading
me to conclude that not all are fully supported."
I did find it odd that Abi was included in a discussion of text editors
(such as EditPad Lite and TextPad). One comment the reviewer had about
the other apps was that they didn't import the formatting of his Word
doc and displayed "greeking" at the top of every document (the
formatting stuff, I assume), but as text editors I personally wouldn't
expect them to do anything else.
Anyway, a very nice review. :-)
