The reason I did the toolbars like this is because they are IMHO too
wide to be in the document window, if I use NSToolbars. And I'm not even
sure I'd have the flexibility.

It is not a good thing.
But I think there are more serious issues than cosmetix like toolbars.
Like supporting plugins, fixing drawing bugs, etc.
