PS: AFAICT, your only remaining addition would be the new paragraph at the
bottom, right? If so, I'm not sure whether it's needed. The latest version
of para 4 already emphasizes the volunteer thing, which is by far the most
important of the three ideas your para adds.
Speaking as a big part of the other history you're mentioning, I don't think
it's really needed for this press release. Ditto for the GPL mention.
If there'd been more advance notice, it might have been fun to do the
standard press release trick of soliciting quotes from *other people* to
introduce those ideas.
For example, here are some TOTALLY MADE UP QUOTES, putting words in the
mouths of prominent people that I KNOW VERY WELL THEY'D NEVER SAY:
