In the past week I have been in touch with some folk involved in the
ivrix (the Hebrew Linux) project; I have been encouraged by their
suggestions and interest, and am hopeful that as result of it the
bidi work will shift up a gear.
Tzafrir Cohen, who is one of the leading figures in Hebrew Linux
world, made a Linux bidi build based on the state of things as of
28/2/2001 available at
ftp://linux.org.il/pub/Hebrew/Rpms/i386/abisuite-0.7.13-
2bidi.i586.rpm
ftp://linux.org.il/pub/Hebrew/Rpms/srpms/abisuite-0.7.13-
2bidi.src.rpm
and he will look for people to test it out and provide feedback as
well as for someone to provide the he_IL localisation. They would
also like to test win32 build under Hebrew enabled Windows, as
the buil-in bidi support might or might not clash with our XP bidi
stuff.
The state of the bidi code is changing all the time. I am grateful to
Michael Pritchett for the work he did this week on the win32
interface; I should be able to commit support for overstriking
characters over the weekend. There are two things that would
greately help us with the bidi work:
(1) to add a bidi build for Unix and win32 to the nightly builds
(2) to setup a Unix and win32 bidi tinderboxes.
