Subject: GNOME / AbiSource bugs [help triage]

It appears we have a bad reputation among GNOME/Helix developers - due
to stability issues. I can easily crash abiword, but it takes some
arcane editing commands that I don't believe Joe Average would be
using.
So seeing as I appear not to be able to find enough time and energy to
hunt down those problems, I've decided to do something else that might
improve the AbiWord reputation: triage all the GNOME bugs.
I've closed a couple of really pointless bugs, and will close more. I
close each with an explanation of what is wrong with the report or why
I believe the bug has been fixed in 0.7.12. When appropriate I
encourage to try 0.7.12 and file new (and better) reports if the
problem persists.
I'd like to encourage everybody - also people who are not programmers,
but want to help out anyway - to go look at the AbiWord bugs
registered in the AbiSource and GNOME bug systems and help triage
them:
o If the report does not contain sufficient information to reproduce
the bug, close it. But make a point of explaining the creater of
the bug that (a) there's a new version of AbiWord out which might
fix the problem, and (b) if that's not the case, s/he should
file a new bug report containing information of how to reproduce
the bug.
o If there's a duplicate, close the newer bug, referring to the older
bug. If there's additional information in the new bug which might
be handy for debugging, post it to the old bug.
This way we get all the relevant information in the _old_ bugs, so
that we get an idea of how old the problem is - which'll help us
prioritize.
o If there is enough information to reproduce the bug, please try to
do so, and register in the bug report whether you have succeeded or
not. Remember to include the version (and platform) of AbiWord you
used.
Remember:
Be polite and informative if closing a bug report. We want to
encourage people to keep filing _good_ bug reports. They will stop if
they feel their effort is not appreciated.
If you do not feel confident dealing with a particular bug report,
skip it. We do not want to just close bugs for the sake of getting a
low bug count!
Cheers,
Jesper
