You're correct that Abiword handles deleting chars by painting them the same 
color as the background (white, in this case).
However, using a GnomeCanvasText item on an AA canvas is dreadful. Want to 
talk about slow? Urgh... If you have Havoc's book, read the couple of 
chapters on the canvas to see exactly what I mean. Also, there's talk that 
the GnuCash people started a RichText canvas item, or at least were 
interested in coding one. We could use this, if it isn't vaporware. Check 
the Gnome-list archives from this past month on Gnome-Office for more info.
However, you may want to use libart to render text on the GdkDrawable. This 
is totally cool with me. I think that this may be preferrable actually.
